INSTRACTION HONOURED WITH GREENTECH-AWARD
HEIDELBERG, Germany, Jul. 25, 2022 On the basis of the international patent classification system IPC, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defined in 2016 a total of eight fields and their IPC codes in which environmental and climate protection relevant technologies are located. The "SME GreenTech Award 2022/23" of the German Society for Consumer Studies starts exactly at this point – and honors the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that have distinguished themselves in one of the fields with extraordinary innovation achievements.
instrAction takes particular delight in the award, since it is a very special recognition of the innovative efforts made over the past few years.
Patents were used as a measure of the innovation performance of companies. Regardless of zeitgeist fluctuations or product trends, patents are an expression of inventiveness, represent an official attestation for an intellectual achievement worthy of protection, are objective testimony that a novel solution has been found.
The laudatory speech of the German Society for Consumer Studies states: "Above all, the wide range of technological approaches of the companies awarded the GreenTech Award was fascinating. Be it the award winner Duesenfeld GmbH, who has developed a groundbreaking process for the environmentally friendly recycling of lithium-ion batteries, or instrAction GmbH, which was able to patent a technology to purify drinking water or wastewater streams from heavy metals using a special resin, or OxFA GmbH, which, among other things, has processes for the production of bio-based formic acid, which in turn can replace fossil raw materials in a wide variety of segments – the winners of the GreenTech Award 2022/23 impressively demonstrated the innovative strength of local SMEs."
We would like to express our gratitude for this fantastic award and view this as a further incentive to continue developing pioneering innovations in the field of water treatment and metal recovery from water streams in future.
INSTRACTION’S WATER PURIFICATION TECHNOLOGY VALIDATED IN STUDIES CONDUCTED AT LEADING RESEARCH INSTITUTES IN GERMANY
MANNHEIM, Germany, Feb. 6, 2019 instrAction GmbH today reported that its water purification technology solution was validated by independent experts in studies conducted at premier research institutes in Germany. instrAction introduced the technology late last year. It’s a first-of-a-kind purification solution that removes bacteria and heavy metals from drinking water while preserving healthy elements – in a single filtration step. The tests were designed to benchmark the performance of instrAction resins in purification products found in homes. The products include standalone devices or filtration devices in large appliances. In tests involving small resin beds, results further demonstrated the solution’s high productivity at high depletion rates.
One study was conducted at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology. The study measured the performance of instrAction MetCap® resins in small cartridges at high flow rates in terms of bed volumes per hour. It focused exclusively on heavy metals absorption. The Institute’s Dr. Schiestel observed: “The results showed that in a small device the resins successfully treated drinking water for lead, cadmium and chromium at high flow velocity. Furthermore, the MetCap® resins demonstrated the promise of offering separation options for additional relevant applications. Thus, there is great potential for the separation of perfluorooctanoic acid, DNA, or even bacteria with this technology.”
A second study was conducted at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Hygiene at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Led by Vice Director, Professor Dr. Markus Gerhard, the study was implemented in two phases: the first phase set out to prove the anti-bacterial properties of instrAction’s BacCap® resins by investigating basic properties like kinetic features and capacity. The results demonstrated complete removal of all bacteria, like E. coli, E. faecalis or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The second stage aimed to establish key application parameters, such as minimizing resin quantity and maximizing productivity at maximum depletion efficiency.
Professor Gerhard observed: “instrAction’s BacCap® resins are the only particle-based material that can reliably remove bacteria from tap water at flow rates typically applied and expected for household pitcher applications or drinking water purifiers, without releasing substances, such as silver, into the filtered water.”
The studies are an important component of instrAction’s commercialization strategy, according to the company’s CSO, Dr. Martin Welter. “We’re very pleased with the outcomes,” he said. “While we were confident that our resins would demonstrate superior performance and productivity in small devices, it’s gratifying to receive validation from respected independent experts. The new data strengthens our market position as we accelerate our work to help customers develop their next-generation water purification products.”

INSTRACTION BREAKS NEW GROUND WITH “NO COMPROMISES” FILTRATION TECHNOLOGY FOR PRISTINE-QUALITY DRINKING WATER
First-of-a-kind solution removes bacteria, preserves healthy elements like calcium and magnesium, and eliminates toxins like zinc and chromium – in a single filtration step
MANNHEIM, Germany, Dec. 10, 2018—With a mission to make pristine-quality drinking water more accessible and affordable for consumers worldwide, instrAction GmbH today unveiled its purification technology solution for homes and businesses. The company shifted focus recently and is now applying its library of 4500+ proprietary resins and rich chromatography expertise to disrupt the business of water purification. With this goal, the company is launching a filtration solution with a ground-breaking promise: In a single filtration step, the technique removes contaminants like bacteria and special micro pollutants, preserves healthy elements like calcium and magnesium, and simultaneously removes toxins like zinc and chromium. It’s a one-step “no compromises” filtration approach that shields against contaminants to deliver purest-quality drinking water at point of use. The resins can be re-used hundreds of times, which drives up yield and reduces overall costs.
In its first commercial deployment, the technology will be used in refrigerators and water dispensers. Pilot testing is underway and the company expects to begin commercialization for OEM applications in the first half of next year. Future applications include industrial uses like waste water treatment, where the technology will be applied to remove harmful contaminants while also recovering precious metals for re-use.
The instrAction solution debuts at a time of rising demand for healthy drinking water worldwide. The total global market for residential water purifiers* will reach US$32.6 billion by 2023, and will grow at a CAGR of 16 percent between now and 2020. The market for membrane filtration solutions** will reach $17.3 billion by 2023. Growth will be strongest in the Asia-Pacific region, due to rapid industrialization and increased use of filtration technologies in water processing plants. Also driving demand is the shift toward healthier lifestyles, with water purifiers now a consumer expectation for homes and businesses.
The quality of drinking water has vastly improved in recent decades thanks to filtration and purification techniques that are available in portable products or embedded in drinking water purifiers, as well as refrigerators. The techniques, however, come with certain limitations that preclude them from offering a “complete solution” capable of eliminating toxic metals and bacteria in a single filtration step.
instrAction stepped in to compensate for the limitations by innovating the industry’s first and only resins that can remove toxic metals and bacteria in one filtration step. With its extensive library of absorption resins developed over 20 years and protected by 18 international patent families, as well as its chromatography expertise and synthesis know-how, the company is well positioned for leadership.
The instrAction filtration method works like this: Unfiltered water flows through a cartridge filled with the instrAction resins. Toxic heavy metals and harmful bacteria are retained within the porous particles of the resin and thus removed from the filtrate. Healthy elements like calcium and magnesium are untouched by the selective instrAction resins. The highly refined selectivity capability is enabled by the multimodal binding principal that dictates when two or more different molecular interactions occur at the same time leading to a distinction between desired and undesired compounds, the first are untouched, while the latter are bound tightly to the absorber resin.
The company’s resins are offered to customers as packed columns or bulk material. They are available in unlimited variations in solid support, polymer coating and ligand types, combinations and densities. instrAction’s CSO, Martin Welter, PhD, characterized the technology as a “tool box”, noting its unmatched flexibility to address unique requirements and solve problems beyond the reach of traditional filtration techniques. “Our skilled development team can fulfill customers’ application-specific needs in customized offerings, sometimes by modifying resins, other times by adjusting application parameters,” he said.
instrAction’s solutions will be produced in Suzhou, China, where the company recently partnered with a leading resin manufacturer to secure an early foothold in this fast-growing market.
“Highest-quality drinking water is not just a health imperative, it’s a human right and we’re excited to apply our technology and expertise to support that imperative,” said CEO Juergen Hoelscher. “Our filtration solution represents the industry’s most comprehensive barrier against harmful contaminants without sacrificing healthy elements found in most drinking water supplies. This makes it a compelling purification option for consumers in high-population cities and regions with aging water pipe networks. In addition, with its high-yield/low-cost advantages, the solution promises to deliver unique value to regions undergoing rapid industrialization.”
